Loaded with atmosphere, charm, great food, nightlife, warm Mediterranean climate, Lisbon is a must destination for 2018.
We leave you here with five things to do in the amazing city of Lisbon.
1. São Jorge Castle and a walk through Alfama
You will have missed an unforgettable moment if you go to Lisbon and do not go to the Castle of São Jorge. It is the highest point of the city, in the middle of the most typical neighborhoods. Here you can see (and feel) the intimate connection of the city with the river Tagus. Alfama is one of the oldest districts of Lisbon, and is a delightful maze of narrow cobbled streets and ancient houses which lead up the steep hill from the Tagus Estuary to the castle of São Jorge. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning “hot fountains” or “baths”.
2. Listening to a Fado
Whether or not you enjoy this style of music, a candlelight dinner listening to fado in Lisbon is a ” must do ”. Today, there are more than 40 fado houses sprinkled throughout Lisbon’s cobblestoned streets, and hundreds of fadista singers perform every night in the city’s Alfama, Mouraria, and Bairro Alto neighborhoods.
3. Visit the Jerónimos Monastery and the Torre de Belém
Declared World Heritage, they two gems of the Manueline Gothic style that easily impress any visitor. The stone-worked vaults are an admirable piece of engineering as are the richness of the decorative elements connected to maritime aspects and the voyages of the navigators.
4. Try the amazingly delicious Portuguese custard tarts of Belém
A rich egg custard nestled in shatteringly crisp pastry, the recipe is a secret kept since 1837, which makes them unique. A sweet pastry that the locals like to accompany with an expresso.
5. Travel by Trolley Car, the ”eléctricos”
The “‘eléctricos”, much like San Francisco’s cable cars, have become a major tourist attraction. Beginning in 1903, the eléctricos replaced horse-drawn trams. The most interesting ride for sightseers is on eléctrico no. 28, which takes you on a fascinating trip through the most history-rich part of Lisbon.
